As you get older, you may experience age-related issues to do with your dental health.

We’re going to take a look at some of these topics in our latest post, as well as older people’s dental care.

Dental problems in the elderly

With the right dental care routine and help from your dentist, you can enjoy healthy teeth and gums throughout your life. Good dental care includes addressing issues that commonly affect older people, so let’s take a look at some of these.

Receding gums

Receding gums are when your gums shrink away from the teeth, exposing the roots. This can not only make your teeth feel more sensitive but also increase the risk of bacteria building up and causing soreness and decay.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s best to get your teeth and gums checked out by your dentist. They will be able to advise you on brushing techniques and may suggest a special mouthwash to help with the sensitivity.

They can also check for gum disease, which is a common cause of receding gums.

Dry mouth

You’re more likely to experience a dry mouth as you get older. This can be simply because of your age or due to health conditions such as diabetes or Sjörgen’s syndrome or even as a side effect of medicine you use.

Saliva is essential for the health of your teeth and gums, helping to prevent decay and disease. So go and see your dentist for a checkup if you notice that your mouth feels dry. They will be able to help you manage your symptoms with products like mouthwash and sugar-free gum and check for any related problems like tooth decay.

Difficulty brushing your teeth

You may have difficulty brushing your teeth if your eyesight is impaired or if you are living with arthritis that restricts your movements.

Your dentist will be able to help you by suggesting aids that make cleaning your teeth easier, such as a handle adapter for your toothbrush. You can also use simple hacks like using a bright light and a magnifying mirror.

Self-care for your teeth and gums at home

As well as going to see your dentist regularly, it’s as important as ever to look after your teeth and gums at home. Follow our simple tips for a fresh and healthy mouth:

  • Clean your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use floss or interdental brushes to clean in between your teeth too.
  • Use mouthwash after every time you brush your teeth.
  • If you have dentures, brush them at least once a day with a special cleaner formulated for dentures and soak them overnight in a denture-cleaning solution.
  • Avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
