If you’re unhappy with your smile, then know that it’s never too late to do something about it. Adults of all ages are opting for teeth straightening to restore both their smile and their confidence.
In this post, we’re going to explain how to straighten teeth as an adult and why it could make a big difference to your dental health as well as your self-esteem.
Can adults straighten their teeth?
The answer is yes, people of any age can have their teeth straightened and enjoy a more appealing smile.
Even if you underwent a teeth straightening programme as a child, you may still benefit from additional treatment as an adult. Your teeth tend to shift in your mouth over time, so you may find that, unfortunately, they are not as straight as you would like them to be.
Why should I straighten my teeth?
The obvious reason for straightening your teeth is to enhance your appearance and improve your self-esteem.
That in itself is an excellent reason, but did you know that straighter teeth can also mean better dental health? Straightening can correct crowded teeth, which means you lower your risk of plaque build-up, gum disease and tooth decay.
You may even find that having straighter, better-aligned teeth makes it easier to talk and chew, and straightening can also correct your bite. This means that your teeth won’t get worn down as easily, and it may even relieve symptoms such as headaches and other aches and pains in the jaw and associated areas.
Teeth straightening options for adults
Braces are a tried-and-tested way of straightening teeth effectively. You can opt for metal braces, similar to ones that you may have used in your childhood. These consist of wires and brackets which put pressure on your teeth to move them into the correct position. Your dentist will move the wires at intervals as part of the straightening programme.
Some people simply don’t like the look of metal braces and instead opt for almost undetectable clear braces. They work on the same principles as traditional metal braces using aligners custom-made for your mouth, which put pressure on your teeth to move them gently into place. This is a great option for anyone who wants a discreet solution that won’t make them feel self-conscious.
Other solutions such as veneers or crowns can work for some people if they only have one or two teeth that are out of alignment. It’s best to discuss options with your dentist to find the treatment that fits your needs the best.
Once you’re done with your teeth straightening treatment, you may wish to consider teeth whitening as the finishing touch to your dazzling new smile. This can be done either at your dentist’s or at home. Again, have a chat with your dentist to find out which option would work best for you.
